Handmade Map of Cocos Island , an artwork masterpiece at TURUBARI

by Research and Information Centre C.I.P.I - Costa Rica on Nov.23, 2009, under Research & Information Center

The larger map of Cocos Island, lies in the nature and adventure park Turubari, and you can find photos and information about it in the following link http://www.cocosisland.cr/?cat=11

The most incredible of this map is that it was handmade carved with gouges (in recycled wood) in a size of 4×3 meters and about three feet tall. Even more impressive is that the map of the island of Cocos was made  in addition to the map of Costa Rica which size is 20 x17 m and was also hand carved …

This artwork is an idea of one of the greatest visionary persons in this country, Mr. Oscar Saborio Alvarado. A laborious task force in TURUBARI carved these maps for nearly two years at a 1:10,000 scale vertical and horizontal 1:25,000 scale map in the case of Costa Rica and on a scale of 1:2000 in the case of the Cocos Island.

In these maps, which are under great amphitheater-type structure, you can see all the rivers of Costa Rica, all Costa Rica’s volcanoes, all mountains of Costa Rica, all cantons and provinces, etc … along with the boundary lines of Panama and Nicaragua.

Also you can see the beaches of Guanacaste, Caribbean beaches, Jaco Beach, the islands of Costa Rica. From the highest mountain of Costa Rica known as the summit of Chirripo to the flashy Arenal Volcano or the Poas volcano, are visible in the most spectacular ever imagined three-dimensional aerial view of our country.

Turubari map is ideal for educational purposes of children and young students of Costa Rica. Thanks to a particular  lighting system with over 300 lights that has been designed, anyone can locate any point of the country and is it is very funtional  to provide short classes in geography, history and turism.

Tourists will be impressesd to see  all the dimensional splendor of Costa Rica, with all its coasts, mountains and national parks of Costa Rica.

We are sure that both, the Ministry of Education of Costa Rica, MEP, as the Costarican Turism Institute, ICT, are very proud to have in Turubari  this artwork masterpiece of Costa Rica map and a map of Cocos Island, ready to educate and show all our wonders.
